Description

Breathers are creatures (?people?) that hang out in bars near the Duad. They are creeps, but are generally avoided because as their name implies they have a breath that is deadly and even if one survives it, it can pollute the spirit. Each has his own formula for his perfect breath, bat wings, vulture vomit, improperly mummified corpses, etc.

This is my impression of one of them who "Generously" offers to aid in passing the Duad, for a price, of course. He/she? also boasts the ability to 'exhale' any scent, sweet or foul.

Was reading through "The Western Lands" by Burroughs the other night. I'd originally intended to wait to get this book till I finished "Cities of the Red Night" and "The Place of Dead Roads" but this book was incredible so I'll have to get it also. Given Burroughs style, the "Ruin the ending" thing doesn't apply anyways.

Hehehe. Good one! ROTFL;-)

But, actually, you might have it wrong.

Actually, this is William S. Burroughs.

A popular "Beat Generation" writer that passed away a few years back and frankly amazed everyone most of all himself he survived even into the 50s considering his lifestyle. His work is on the surface autobiographical fiction of a lifelong heroin addict who was also mostly gay and rather wretched. He shot his wife playing "William Tell" drunk and moved to Tangiers where his heroin addiction (among other vices) went out of control, then he re-habbed for a while and finished his work "Naked Lunch" which became one of the major obscenity trials of the century. The one, that is, that opened the door to modern censorship standards, namely about none;-) A lot of nice, semi-autobiographical titles by him; Junky, Queer, The Wild Boys, Interzone, Cities of the Red Night, The Place of Dead Roads and, of course "The Western Lands". Like many other 'controversial' authors/artists from DeSade to Dwayne Tinsley, the world is forever depraved... uh "Deprived" without him;-)

Under the surface, his work is very deep and philosophical, not on a "Man should-" but "Man is" basis. A genius drug addict's dark, paranoid vision. "The Western Lands" borrows heavily from Ancient Egyptian mythology, but it's only on the surface a quest by fictional characters for immortality... The "Duad" is the final barrier in that journey, essentially "The river of Sh-t", but it's the passage from death to the other world.

Now, here's a very good YouTube video, using some "Animatrix" clips, and a pop song based on that book. It's a good introduction without any real vulgarity. I like Burroughs a lot, though for the record he's a "Don't be". I just recognize his brilliance.

Seriously, I thought you knew and were pulling my leg, maybe you got me, but you might not be. Remember I said I'd love an extended foreign vacation for a "Writer/artistic creative boost. Just laying low, cheap rent and food, a low budget Burroughs bit... Well minus the Heroin and young boys, since I'm not into either..."

Anyways, the film "Naked Lunch" is kind of like... Um, take "Justine" and make a "G" rated version of it as a friendly, funny tip of the hat to it. Then read some things, like short stories from "Interzone" the first chapter of "Naked Lunch", etc. It's a good test for what you can stomach, and unlike simple vulgarity, his stuff is not just well written but brilliant.
