The analogy of the dam

Description

From Foaming Rabid, the "Analogy of the Dam"

Imagine a great dam. This dam represents America. (or in abstract any great progressive society) The building of the dam represents a grand work, the genius of the scientists, the practical skills of the engineers and the devotion and strength of the laborers. Not to be excluded also are the ones who engineered the finances, the ones who organized the labor and the ones who had the vision to see it through. The water built up behind the dam is the fruit of all the labor, for the potential energy is efficiently turned into electricity which the country shares.

The situation now is that a few elites, who already have a great share, have had their Toadies punch a hole in the center of this dam. They then have a waterwheel hooked up to a generator. In short, they are tapping the water potential without going through the fair distribution system that already is rigged to give them more power than they deserve.

This is a serious problem.

The first is that this tap lowers the water level, lowering the real power the generator can draw upon to generate electricity. This makes everyone have to pay more for less power.

The second... Well, one doesn't have to be an engineer to realize that punching a hole in a dam is a bad idea. The dam is developing cracks and the process of collapse is starting, but the elites use their influence to keep any engineers from even fixing the cracks, for fear they will plug their hole in the process.

Unless it is stopped, soon the dam will collapse. The Elites don't care. They built their mansions on the hill, not that they think even that far ahead. They only care about the next "Fiscal Quarter" or in layman's terms how much they make in the next three months. The workers in the dam at the top want their bribes and at the bottom want to keep their jobs another day. The media tells the people in the city downriver that nothing is wrong, that if they can't make their power bill it is their fault and that they should ';pull themselves up by their bootstraps' and stop whining. Soon the lights will go out, and then they will complain, but then the water will be rushing towards the town.
